DRIVESHARE
DriveShare provides secure enterprise file sharing over the Internet without requiring cumbersome tunnels or complicated setup. DriveShare is server-based, and the client is available at no charge from the webmaster.com website. DriveShare makes accessing files on a remote system (either on the local LAN or across the Internet) easy and simple, providing enhanced security and easy configuration.

You can mount the remote share as a local drive or a folder. Drive Share allows you to:

  • Utilize Local Operating System Tools
  • Manage remote files easily and natively using all the tools available in your Operating System.
  • Use local backup utilities to backup your data.
  • Run popular antivirus software on both your local and remote drives.
  • Create local scripts to manipulate files.
  • Turn any computer into a Remote Attached Storage™ device, providing the features of NAS (Network Attached Storage) plus secure remote access and more.

DriveShare is the tool of choice for ISPs because it makes managing hosted files as easy as managing local ones, with complete security. Your users will love the ease of use; if they want to modify a web page, they can just open it, in any tool. Do they want to publish a video? Just save it to the hosted directory from any tool. Do they want to back up their web site? They can use any back up tool, even WinZip, as easily as if the files were on their desktop.

DriveShare was designed specifically for those that need to access their websites, home computer files or office file system -- it's not just for ISPs. WebMaster offers versions of DriveShare that will allow the home or small office user to gain access to their files, and with Rendezvous this will even work between two networks that are both behind NAT routers.

DriveShare is perfect for corporations that want secure access for their employees. DriveShare can use external authentication methods (such as XML over HTTPS) or its own user, group, password and certificate authentication. Internal access control allows you to add a specific path to a user or to a configured group of users. This allows for easy management of shares for specific work groups. Server views consisting of groups of shared files can be created and named, allowing a set of directories to be shared with a single command. Client views, consisting of groups of shared files, even if offered by different services, can be created and named, allowing files hosted on different servers to be easily manipulated.

DriveShare is similar to ParaDrive, but it is licensed as a server. The DriveShare client is free to download from our site and can be redistributed at no charge. Internet Power Users will enjoy the easy access of their remote systems and webmasters will enjoy being able to change files in real time without the intermediate step of staging the files for upload.

This will completely replace the need for other file sharing type systems. DriveShare will seamlessly work with the other packages including CryptoFS, Reflections and FlashBack future products that will be available shortly. DriveShare is also an easy way to share data between different OS types. Ease of installation, management and transfer security makes DriveShare the perfect replacement for other types of file sharing services.

With DriveShare, you define folders on your hard drive, specify who can access them and what access they are allowed, and it just works. Authentication is always performed and data is always encrypted. Your computer is safe. You, or those you authorize, can access your data with almost any tool from almost any computer. It's that simple.

Multiple Platforms

WebMaster Incorporated maintains its commitment to provide its tools on multiple platforms and supports XP/2003/Vista, OSX, Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris. This commitment allows our customers the most flexibility in deployment of its servers and tools. 64bit versions of our software will be available in 1st quarter '08.

Access Security Requirements

Both the server and the client portions of DriveShare can be configured with additional security. This allows you to have the mounted drive or directory unmount (detach) or prompt for a password when:

  • A specific time has been reached.
  • The screen saver activates.
  • No activity has been detected.
  • A Hot-Key is pressed.
  • The drive is mounted.

Your data is important and this feature will allow you to protect your mounted resources when you leave your computer. If you're at a cyber-cafe or have roommates, or any time your computer may be accessed by others, you can use the above security settings to detach or protect your resources. Likewise, corporate MIS departments can control how access is given and revoked. This protects corporate documents and client or patient data.

Rendezvous

Rendezvous is a service that WebMaster Incorporated provides that allows a DriveShare client and server to access each other when one or both systems are behind a NAT (Network Address Translation, which allows a router to act as an agent between the Internet and a local network). The problem with NAT is that it relies on an outbound connection being instigated by the host computer and a system across the Internet cannot directly access a system behind a NAT router. This is where Rendezvous comes in. Two systems both connect to our server at the office. When only one device is using NAT we simply tell it to connect to the other system. When both devices are using NAT we can either proxy the connection (additional services charges may apply) or, in many cases, use an IP handoff technique.

Using Rendezvous is simple. You just register at WebMaster for the service, enter your user name and password on the server and client. The server will automatically detect when you need assistance to make a connection. The ParaDrive server will show Rendezvous all the shares that it currently has and when you connect with a client all those shares will be available.

Also, Rendezvous will allow you to access files via a secure web server (so you will not have to download or install the client if you just need to get or drop off a few files) and future enhancements will allow you to search all the files you have access to and to set ‘watches’ for files and information. When a watch is triggered an email or instant message will be sent telling you of its availability.

Security Tokens

Security tokens offer more security options. ParaDrive will soon support physical security tokens. A physical security token is a device that contains a key that cannot be copied out of the device. ParaDrive will support a variety of USB security tokens.

Some ways that you can use a physical security token include:

  1. Use one as an emergency access mechanism. Store it in a secure place and if you ever forget your password, the token can let you back in.
  2. Protect the token with a short PIN number. Even if someone looks over your shoulder and captures your PIN number, it's useless to them without the token.
  3. Store all your ParaDrive authorizations in one token and protect them all with a single password or PIN number.
  4. Load ParaDrive onto the token along with authorizations. With one simple USB device, you can install ParaDrive and access all your shares securely. Mail or give it to a friend, coworker, or family member and it will install ParaDrive and walk them through accessing their shares instantly. If lost or stolen, it is useless without the PIN number, and you can revoke or change its authorization easily if necessary.
